These cobblestones were a later addition to the roads of Rothenburg. Originally roads were dirt(or mud) and were strewn with garbage and sewage, both from animals and humans. Medieval europeans hadnt put together any connection between disease and sewage. After the plague wiped out over 1/2 of europe, they got it figured out. Underground sewer systems became the norm.
