During WW2 only 10% of the buildings in Rothenburg were destroyed by bombs. The Nazis occupied the city and the city was a target of the Allieds for massive bombings. NAZI GENERALS WERE NEVER ALLOWED TO SURRENDER PER ORDER FROM THE FUHRER. The Allieds planned to destroy the city via bombs but at the last minute the assistant state of the US learned of the plans. It just so happened his mother had visited Rothenburg and brought back a painting of the city. Altho the assistant sec of state had never visited the city he knew of its beauty and history. He convinced the allied general to at least try to spare the city. The Allied general offered a deal to the Nazi general outside of the walled city. You get to leave Rothenburg safely, we spare the city. He took the deal and the city was spared.
