this was a county road thru the seminole indian reservation. this area and the land for 50 miles south historically was everglades and marshland. in the beginning of the 20th century, water was diverted from the everglades and lake okeechobee to make farmland. at the time, the perception of the glades was of a wasteland, and turning this into farmland was seen as productive. this was before the advent of treehuggers and environmentalists.
