notice the different color brick around the windows of buildings. the english used to tax homeowners according to how many windows they had. a 'window tax' was levied to pay for wars and other stuff, the theory being the more windows u had, the more affluent u were. so homeowners regularly bricked over windows, and often these bricked over areas were servants quarters. during peacetime, maybe when taxes were lower, the windows would be reinstalled, obviously using new unmatching bricks.
