in the 30's, paris was the home of serious intellectual lions like sartre, camus, hemingway, fitzgerald, gertrude stein. etc. they were known as "the lost generation" and the malaise seems to be attributed to the WWI slaughter. i'm not so sure about that, but they sure were great writers. dick cavett tells a story about gertrude stein on her deathbed. a literary critic is standing next to her and inquires "gertrude, with all your life experiences, what is the answer?". gertrude replies "what is the question?". so here world traveller Jean Paul is musing........"another year of travel, another year of making shit up!!"
