this was something to the effect "a memorial to the jewish men, women, and children who were taken to concentration camps". the vichy government and french soldiers actually fought "against" the allies in north africa. degaulle stayed in london with a provisional government that was anti-nazi. marshall petain was the frenchman head of the vichy government. in the late stages of the war, many were killed by the french underground and petain was sentenced to death. his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
