our rental car, francois, was great with a couple of exceptions. genevieve has us in circles with the construction in vernon. we had been going in circles for 1/2 hr and i stopped to ask directions. when starting francois(a manual tranny to save money), i didn't have the clutch depressed and the car turned over in gear and almost hit the car parked in front of us. i never saw a late model car that did that. even my little honda civic in neutral required clutch to be depression to activate starter. it scared the shit out of me. dinging the car, although i had amex insurance, would be enough to take a lot of joy out of the trip. the first day on a rental car requires lots of caution. our first day in ireland, of course driving on the wrong side of the road, i scraped mirrors on a narrow city street with an oncoming car. the mirror folded back, but it had small scratches on the mirror paint. i worried about that the whole trip. turns out, they didn't see or charge me for the scratches. anyway, this story ends happily, we returned the car 5 days later with a "no damage" report.
