pont du hoc, where army rangers climbed 100 ft cliffs to take the beach head. allied planes shelled the absolute shit out of this place before landing. they kept bombing because they kept seeing guns pointing out to sea. turns out, the gemans had put logs out of the pillboxes to disguise the fact they had retreated and moved the guns several hundred yds back into hedgerows. so when troops scaled the cliff, almost all germans were gone. anyone that saw 'band of brothers or pvt ryan or the longest day' can remember the soldiers discovering the guns in hedgerows and dropping incendiary bombs down the barrels, destroying them. notice the deep mounds from bombs.
