german language-u just cant understand the language with intuition. i needed a ploy, something that worked. we had a small dictionary, but it's clumsy. so i'd just approach people with my thumb and forfinger almost joined, and say "little english?". if i got a nein or no, i'm on my way. if they said "a little" or "yes", i'm in business. sometimes i'd use charade type signals to communicate. the germans were generally friendly and gracious, more so in rural areas than in cities, just like anywhere else.
