seven mile bridge-the original bridge there was for a railroad. henry flagler, the railroad magnate, originally built the rail to key west. roads didnt follow until 20yrs later. with the building of the panama canal, flagler figured key west would prosper from ships refueling at key west. turns out , ship technology changed and and they didnt need to stop for fuel. the railroad was later given to the state, who in the 1930's began building a road to replace the railroad. a hurricane hit some of the construction crew while building. a 20 foot surge wiped out a train full of workers and the tracks, killing over 1200 people.
