cooke city-the east entrance to yellowstone, used to be one of the most popular areas. that was before mudslides destroyed a lot of the entrance road(beartooth highway). at first, the highway was to reopen in a few months, now the locals say a few years. a few yrs ago, they found a small motherload of gold up here. president clinton intervened and persuaded the mining company not to explore the gold and compromise the natural integrity of the area. according to geoligists, there is still about a billion in gold in those mountains. summer population here is approx 900, wintertiime it drops to 90.
