at first glance of munich, we commented on the general ugliness of some of the buildings. lots of greys, browns, and generally utilitarian architecture. as we learned more, it all made sense. WWII bombs fucked everything up here, destroyed fully 80% of the city. the city was bombed late in the war. we had to recapture parts of southern france to launch the bombers from closer range so they would have enough fuel to return after dropping their bombs. why bomb Munich? especially in 1945, this late in the war? munich was on the way to getting THE BOMB, as we were with our manhatten project. this was the center for the research. as a matter of fact, the germans were far ahead of the allies in rocket research, and we only stopped that by bombing the hell out of their rocket plants. after the war, we literally imported the top german scientists for our efforts in the space project. werner von braun was the most notable.
